R7 250X vs GTX 750 – An Unfair Fight? – HD 7770 GHz Edition Rebrand

Following a comment a few weeks back I decided to test out AMD’s regularly fogotten R7 250 GPU in its 250X form. Sure it might just be a rebranded HD 7700 Ghz Edition… but how does it hold up against the budget poster boy – the GTX 750?

The PC we are running the game on consists of the following:

CPU: Intel Core i5 4590 @ 3.7Ghz
Motherboard: Gigabyte B85M-DS3H
Ram: 8GB DDR3
PSU: 500W EVGA 80+ White
Case: Corsair 88R

  • Cheers for clarifying some of the typos folks, been a long week 😂

On another note, thinking about doing a 1 year in video so feel free to ask questions … that's me assuming you want to hear me warble on randomly of course 🤔

  • 1:50 Wrooong! An R7 250E is actually an HD 7750
But an R7 250 (without E) is just an underpowered piece of shit than is 50% weaker than the R7 250E

  • The R7 250 is actually an Oland based card (8 ROPs, terrible performance)
And the R7 250X is a rebranded HD 7770 GHz Edition (16 ROPs, mediocre performance).

So, the R7 250X is basically 2x times faster than the R7 250, lol

  • i'm about to purchase an R7 250x for a secondary build (Phenom II X4 945 w 4gb DDR3) since it is so cheap… i hope i can play triple A tittles from 2010 to 2016 at medium settings or higher in my 1360×768 display.
Overall this cards provides something console-like experience for much cheaper price.

Nevertheless if i could get my hands in a 260x on cheap, i would go for that GPU instead. It does provide "almost" 1080p resolution experience even for 2018 tittles.

At the end of the day, the bare minimum GPU for 1080p is the HD 7850 / R7 370. That card can still play 1080p games from 2018 at med to high settings at playable framerates

  • It sucks that there's no more good budget cards on the market. GT 1030 is bad and entry level GPUs from AMD (RX 560) are scarce and pricey here. Good video. Subbed!

  • Why do you use 16x AF and FXAA on old cards? I think without these options frame rate will be better

  • I had a R7 250X briefly but returned it when performance in Borderlands (1080p) was very slow and jumpy on low. I'd get the GTX 750 or ti version at this point going forward.

  • Whoa, first time I've ever had my comment featured in a video. 🙂

Something I should've said also in my comment, and maybe you can cover, is the Dual graphics mode that you can do with a AMD apu.
I have my R7-250 with a A8-2870K APU, and with the special drivers, the graphics card of the APU pairs up with the R7 250, and it gets preformance better than the 750. 🙂
GTA V at 1920×1200 normal settings gets over 60fps consistently 😀
A great bonus, especially considering it's half the price of a 750.

  • Some contetext of the AMD models – 250X = 7770 (Cape Verde XT)/ 250 = RX 430 (OlandXT) / 260X (Bonaire XTX)

  • 7850 = R7 265
    7870 = R9 270
    R9 270X is a 270 with a slightly higher memory clock.
